While riding along I tried to imagine
That I had eyes in the back of my head
I would know what was coming before it arrived
A glimpse of the future, behind me instead

Pushing the big ring I couldn’t give more
It seemed I was flying by the whir of my wheels
In the distance my mirror revealed that some rider
Was trying to pass me… you know how that feels!

I had plenty of time to react to the effort
My opponent’s attempt, it would not succeed
With foresight behind me I pushed even harder
More distance between me and the offender, indeed

With that mashing done I recalled how I thought
I was already maxed out, out of breath, out of power
Just knowing that someone was trying to pass me
Gave me a rush, then pavement I devoured

Somehow no matter how hard I push me
The cars pass without effort, it’s easy for them
The pedals they press don’t require much muscle
Yet I’m pleased to see them safely by me again

I don’t know what I’d do without this optical insight
Its like having eyes in the back of my head
Now I can work on my cadence and power
Knowing what’s behind as well as ahead
